As I have mentioned before, the mortgage industry is taking a big hit right now. The housing market is very slow, and this affects lending companies, too.
This morning, my boss “Robin” was an hour late for work. I called her on her cell phone to make sure she was okay. She was in her car, and said she’s fine. End of conversation. I hung up assuming that she’d be walking into work shortly.
A few minutes later, my dear co-worker “Ann” who is my cubicle neighbor, sent me an e-mail with the subject line “Hit by lay-off—Bye”. Indeed, she had been let go. Ugh. She is a wonderful woman. A widow raising her two grandchildren.
A few minutes after that, the big boss called me and “Maria” into her office. She informed us that “Ann” had been laid-off and that “Robin”, our boss, volunteered to be laid-off. When I had talked to her earlier this morning, she wasn’t driving into work at all. She was driving across the country, moving to her new home. I’ll miss her. She was a great woman and boss.
“Maria” and I are the last two standing in our little group. “Maria” is my new boss, and thankfully, we have a very good working relationship.
Still, it’s just so shocking that this lay-off is affecting two people who I have grown close to through my day job. I also feel very humbled that for some reason I am still here. I don’t understand it, but I’m grateful.

Oh, gosh, I hate layoffs. :( When Cherry and Autumn's mom and I all worked together, we worked for a huge company that would periodically lay off 10% of its work force, whether the group they were in needed them or not. It SUCKED. Huge blow to morale. I'm sorry, for you and for Ann. :( Robin seems like she'll be OK.
Oh, after I moved to my current company, they had two rounds of layoffs pretty early on. I remember feeling 'shell shocked' after the second round, and thinking to myself, "What I really need right now is a Margarita and a pedicure". Because you know, it's all about me and MY needs. ;) But really, don't you think you could make good money at a salon that did pedicures AND served margaritas?
J- Believe it or not, there is a hoity-toity salon in my hometown that does that, only I think it's martinis. A pedi and a martini for $25. Can you believe it?!
Ally Bean- No good-bye party. My boss didn't even get to say goodbye, and "Ann" had about 5 minutes to pack up her stuff and go. Sad. At least I have their personal e-mail addresses.
It's happening everywhere....we are having people laid off all over the place by mee too. It's so sad.
That sucks! What a hard position to be in.
yea, it's rough. I've been through it many times. The no goodbyes was always the hardest for me. I don't do well with changes.
