Because Sunburn and Honeymoons Don't Mix Well

eSuitor and I are going to Hawaii for our honeymoon, which means that this slice of wonder bread will be out in the sunshine! I'm a fair-skinned redhead. So that means that I will need some heavy-duty sunscreen. I'm wondering what you recommend in a waterproof sunblock (I prefer at least an SPF 50). Also, do you know of a good waterproof sunblock for faces that doesn't burn your eyes?

Hi Starshine, I use sunblock also, and I'm a brown-skinned gal, but you can never have too much skin protection, right? :) Anyway, I've heard that Hawaiian Tropic Ozone Sunblock SPF 70 is really good for fair-skinned people. I'm not sure if it's waterproof, though.

Hawaii for your honeymoon sounds lovely!

So I'm a nerd and have done some reading. Basically, anything higher than 50 gives you a false sense of being able to stay in the sun longer. SPF is determined in a lab without wind, sand, water, salt, etc. Soooo, the key is to reapply often. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the continuous spray kinds. I just spray a couple coats on to start and keep reapplying after that. It dries super fast too. Neutrogena Cooling Mist actually cools as you put it on and leaves a little sheen. Coppertone Sport Continuous Spray is great too and really stays on. It's waterproof/sweatproof too. The nice thing about the spray kind is if you get sandy and salty you don't have to rub a cream around on all that grit. That feels nasty. You just respray! Both kinds I told you about come in SPF 30 or 45. Also, SPF only protects against UVB, not really UVA so layer with your cute pink hat, some sunglasses, and little shade here and there.

Lovies,
Sissy

Fallene Total Block Clear SPF 65 for the face is wonderful for me. And I just got La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX (SPF 15) for my face and neck when the sun is less bright. Haven't tried it yet.

Both are from the skin care department of a local plastic surgery group. They aren't prescription, but they are available only through doctors' offices.

Thanks, Ally! I'm going to call my dermatologist today, to see if I can get some of that.

Remember a hat, too. ;) That will look fetching when you're away from the beach, and you'll save your face as well.

ML, You're right...it doesn't matter how fair or dark one's skin tone is, everyone should protect their skin!

Jilly, thanks for the info about UVA/UVB. I read the article you sent me about it...scary! I do believe I'll be wearing my hat, glasses and sun protective clothing, in addition to my sunblock. eSuitor is blonde and fair skinned, but his skin gets a nice tan. Still, he believes in sun protection, and he told me that he's bring a sun hat on our honeymoon, too. :)

Ditto the hat idea. I'm afraid I don't have any good suggestions!

J and AM,

You'll be happy to know that I already bought a hat for my honeymoon! It's pink and very girlie, with a nice wide rim to keep the freckles to a minimum. :) Oh, wait, it might be a little late for that! I already have more freckles on my nose alone than I can possibly count!

I brought a hat with me. It was the cute floppy straw hat. I still burned a little. But Hawaii is at sea level so it wasn't as awful as it is here. I personally stick with the Banana Boat "Faces". It's oil-free.

I have no idea about waterproof stuff, because I almost never go to the beach or pool, but just a little reminder that everyone should use sunscreen EVERY day--not just for healthcare reasons, but also to stay wrinkle-free! Clinique City Block is a great (light and non-greasy) everyday option. It will be so worth it when we're 40 and look 30!!!
